An ancient priest in a red city, offering a sacrifice to the gods.

Claimed is the first title of Oculi Fine Editions, the collaboration between Crooked Eye Press in the United States and Night Eye Books in the Netherlands. Francis Stevens — the pen name of Gertrude Barrows Bennett — published this weird tale of supernatural horror in 1920.

A block of green lava, carried off a volcanic island that has risen out of the Atlantic, becomes a casket no one can open. It passes through a curio dealer’s shop into the hands of Jesse Robinson, a hard old millionaire whose motto is “What I want I get, and what I get I keep” — and a god older than the race of men is drawn out of the sea to claim it back.

Jason Mowry painted five full-page illustrations and drew fifteen black-and-white chapter headings for the edition. The binding is designed by Crooked Eye Press in collaboration with Gabby Cooksey, who tattoos the leather. The book is published by Crooked Eye Press with art direction by Night Eye Books, and will be printed letterpress at Kraaiven Press in Tilburg on Hahnemühle mould-made paper, from Monotype Caslon newly cast by Offizin Parnassia in Vättis.
